School Programs

School programs at Shelton History Center enhance critical thinking and cognitive skills through hands-on activities and cooperative learning. Pre- and post- visit materials are available. Read descriptions below to learn about the program appropriate for your classroom.

chores Children's Chores & More
For second graders
Help with chores children had to do before our world had supermarkets and modern appliances.


Living History Tour
Best for third and fourth graders
Introduce students to buildings and people of long ago in the Brownson House, Trap Fall School, and Wilson Barn. Interpretation is made through the artifacts, tools, and furnishings found in each building.

haystack Farming---Success or Failure?
For fifth or sixth graders
We visit the classroom with reproductions and supplies to conduct an in-school field trip. Explore the finances and resources of two local farms through primary source documents. Analyse the data and try some tools.
This program can also be arranged as a site visit!

What happens when an agrarian society meets urbanization?
Through the examination of documents used in pre-visit activities and the exploration of artifacts from the award-winning exhibit, "Three Centuries of Shelton," students discover daily life and labors of Connecticut citizens in the late 1800's. Conclude in your classroom with suggested activities.

  1. Please call (203) 925-1803. Leave both day and evening phone numbers.

  2. Allow at least 3-4 weeks notice to plan your tour or program.

  3. Programs operate seasonally. Please be aware that all buildings are used but only one is heated, so dress accordingly.

  4. Allow 1� to 2� hours on site (varies according to program).

  5. The Wilson Farm Stand museum shop is open when you visit.

    Items for children are 25 cents through $10.00.

  6. The Wilson Barn is handicapped accessible.

  7. $4.00/student plus $10.00 program fee per day for use of facilities for most programs.

  8. Confirmation and pre-visit materials will be mailed.

  9. Payment is due upon or before arrival; deposit is required. Checks may be made payable to "Shelton Historical Society, Inc."
